Tommy's Burgers

Categories: Burgers, Fast Food

5 star rating

Chili.

If you love chili and haven't been to Tommy's turn off your computer and start driving! The Chili is so think so beefy so delicious so in my tummy right now (I had it for lunch today!).  Don't stop with a Cheeseburger, get the chili cheese fries too! Have you had the chili cheese fries at Carl's Jr? when you look at your order you see a lot of fries and not so much chili. Tommy's chili cheese fries has so much chili on it people will say wow you got fries with your chili; that's if you can even see the fries under all that chili and cheese!.

I know Tommy's is not for everyone; if you are a traditional burger eater and not into chili then this is definitely not the place for you but if you crave chili once in a while like me then this has to be stop #1.

The price is right too: Cheeseburger, Chili Cheese Fries and a large soda for 7 bucks!

Buono Pizzas & Pastas

Category: Pizza

3 star rating

Today was my second time having a pizza delivered from Buono Pizza.

What I like about the pizza is that they slice the sausage instead of chop it up; It's different than most places and I think the flavor is distributed better this way.

The slices are fold-able; this is a major plus, i must fold my slice when i eat pizza.

The crust does not taste like cardboard; I ate the whole slice.

Why 3 stars? I think 3 stars is a decent rating, if I were blown away I would go higher but I know there is better pizza in the area and I just haven't found it yet.

Fatburger Trabuco Grove

Fatburger delivers a very well dressed burger but at a price more than I would like to pay. The burger is delicious, cooked when ordered and assembled with your favorite condiments.

My problem with Fatburger is the price; I ordered a combo and after adding a slice of cheese to the burger for a buck my total was just short of $11. I can get a satisfying and just as filling meal at In-N-Out for 6 bucks which is why I will have a very difficult time returning.

If the combo total came out to about $7-8 this would definitely be a place I would eat at often.

Thai Spice

Category: Thai

2 star rating

We arrived for dinner around 7pm and that tables were about 70% full with 4-5 people waiting for ToGo orders; for me this was a good sign especially for a Tuesday night.

I'm not a big Thai food eater, my usually dish is chicken satay so this review is of my only Thai dish and my restaurant observations.

First off, I read several reviews saying how fast people get their food; this must be the lunch crowd because dinner took about 15 mins to come out which isn't excessively long but i was expecting it to come out sooner considering it was only satay.

Our food arrives and I open my little container of peanut sauce; it looked very thick; I dipped a piece of chicken into it and broke the surface! liquid poured through the surface, my sauce must have sat in this container for a while because it separated; once mixed it tasted ok but I've had much better tasting and smoother sauce at other places. you get four skewers of chicken which made for a filling dinner, I didn't care for the salad and fried rice that came with the plate.

special note: napkins held behind the counter and you have to ask for them! I accept this setup at mom and pop restaurants but not a place this big.

My Thai "Iced" Tea was warm and tasted a 6 on a scale of 10; overall a 3 for not being cold.

dinner for 2 came out to $26 which i think was expensive for the meal we had.

Bamboo Bamboo's Chinese Cuisine

3 star rating

My co-workers have eaten here a few times now and recommed it over Pick Up Sticks(about 2 miles away), so I decided to give it a try for todays lunch; I had the Chef's Special Chicken which came with rice, a small salad and a cream cheese wonton. The chicken was very tasty; according to the menu it is cooked in wine sauce. I definitely needed more rice and discovered later that I could have subsituted my salad for more rice (I'll do this next time).

I will definitely eat here again and try more of the menu; it's not the best chinese food but it was decent and very affordable; the lunch special was $5.45

FYI: Yelp marks this place on the wrong side of La Pata; it's in the plaza that has the Starbucks on the corner of Pico and La Pata right next to the Charro Chicken.

Irvine China Garden

Category: Dim Sum

4 star rating

Sunday morning dim sum; we show about 15 mins before it opens (10am on weekends) and there is already a group of about 15 people standing outside waiting for the doors to open...this is always a good sign.

Once we were seated the carts started coming around (to me it is not dim sum if you order it from a menu and they just bring it out); I read several reviews about poor service and I had a completely different experience, everyone was friendly and we were well taken care of; it probably helps that my wife speaks cantonese.

The food was good but not quite at the level of other dim sum restaurants I have been to; I stuck to my favortie items which all have something to do with pork (cha siu). I would have rated this place 3.5 stars if the option existed.

We were done at 10:30 and the restaurant was already full with about 20 people outside waiting (word of mouth said 15-20 mins); so this place does get crowded fast. get the best service and most choices, go when it opens.

This morning we had breakfast at Zov's and it was very good. I had the traditional breakfast (eggs, bacon, hash and pancakes) and it was very delicious, the pancakes were exceptional; I also sampled the raisin brioche french toast and it is something I definitely would want to try next time we go here.

Service was excellent; we will definitely go here again.

Roman Cucina

Category: Italian

5 star rating

You can see Roman Cusina from the street on Harbor and you can enter through front door but the main entrance is in the back as is the large parking lot for all the businesses in the area. When you walk in through the back entrance you pass 3 small tables for two and head to the hostess stand. Around 8pm the wait was 20 minutes.

The restaurant is romantically lit with the chandeliers and strings of light but it definitely does not have the romance volume level in the main room; if you are interested in a more romantic dinner you might want to request seating in the back; there is foot traffic with people walking in/out but it's not as loud and seemed like a more intimate setting.

We first had the mozzarella garlic bread which came with a dipping bowl of marinara; the bread is excellent on its own and 10 times better with the marinara; the sauce rocks!

For dinner I stuck with my usual Chicken Parm and my wife had the nights special which was Chicken Carbonara. The chicken parm was a nice thin piece of chicken completely covering the pasta that was beneath it; this dish was delicious; after I started having the full feelings I keep on eating it because It was so good. I also sampled the carbonara and it too was very tasty; my wife mentioned how this dish has been a disappointment at other restaurants and was very happy with her dinner.

I placed a vote for "kid friendly" because I saw 2 large tables with families and all the kids had the usual activity coloring sheet and crayons.

I think this was the first restaurant I went to where all the waiters were men; not sure if this was intentional or just a coincidence. Service was great; we were well attended without the feeling of being hovered.

This is definitely a restaurant I would go to again and recommend to friends.

UPDATE 9/8/2007
We went back for another excellent dinner, I had the sausage lasagna and my wife had the chicken alfredo. This time we had dessert and tried the tiramisu; I've had tiramisu at a lot of restaurants and this one is at the bottom of the list; the cheese layer was thick and tart which killed it for me; we couldn't even finish it. We still love the restaurant and will definitely come back but not for the tiramisu.

Tony's Little Italy Pizza

Category: Pizza

5 star rating
 08/09/2007
The day I decided to try a pizza from Tony's was the day my life changed; Tony makes an incredible stuffed pizza! I always order a small and it's more than enough for me and my wife; it may be a small but when you pick up the box it's heavier than a large from other places. 2 pieces are enough to fill me up but I'm always wanting to go for a third slice; think before going for #3, you're gonna be so full you wont want to move anymore.

I've had garlic and bell peppers a couple of times and my experience has been a more runny pizza; my guess is the water content from the bell peppers. Pizza was still great.

my favorite toppings are pep and sausage; the sausage is delicious and probably what puts Tony's as my absolute favorite pizza.

The crust tastes great and eating the crust is as much a pleasure as eating the rest of the slice.

Comparing Tony's to BJ's; I like BJ's but it just isn't at the same level as Tony's; the biggest difference is the crust, BJ's has a crust almost similar to a Pizza Hut pan pizza. I can an actually pass on eating the crust. I also think BJ's pizza is a little lighter with the toppings, I would eat about 3-4 slices compared to the 2 slices that fill me with a Tony's pizza.

If you like Chicago style pizza head on over to Tony's and order a Peperoni and Sausage Stuffed Pizza; you wont regret it. If you haven't had a stuffed pizza before give it a try and then send me a message of thanks after wards :)

La Bruschetta Restaurant

Category: Italian

4 star rating
 08/08/2007
We are staying the night in Scotts Valley and searched yelp for a place to eat and found La Bruschetta; the reviews are good and I also keep in mind a negative reviews that had to do with the amount of time it took for food to be prepared.

Driving to this place made it obvious that this is a locals restaurant; if I didn't find it on yelp I don't think I would have even driven by it. For a Wednesday night there were about 4 tables of customers but space for plenty more; we choose to eat outside with the trees.

I had the gnocchi with tomato and basil and my wife had the penne alla contadina; both dishes were delicious. The bread served was a focaccia that was great on its own; it came with 2 dipping olive oils, garlic and chopped olives. For desert we had the tiramisu which was just ok; it was a large slice big enough for 2 people but not as rich as we were expecting; the cream was light and almost whip cream like.

Dinner for 2 will run about 50 bucks with tip.
